Harrison’s animal rights absolutism is admirable
To the editor:
Boundless kudos to C. David Harrison for his letter in your July 7-20 issue!
I admire and envy his absolutism more than tongue can tell, but for most of us to try to imitate it would be sheer hypocrisy. I’m still a carnivore and I still –– reflexively, and not without misgivings –– swat bloodsucking insects when it’s my blood they’re after. (If only they would evolve a non-pruritic saliva I could be more forbearing.)
I’m sure Mr. Harrison is correct about the cruelty of fishing. I wonder if it would be such a popular pastime if fish could scream.
Cruelty, I believe Mr. Harrison would agree, is by many orders of magnitude the most vicious of human vices. The best reason for voting against John McCain was to prevent a woman who shoots animals from an airplane from attaining a position a heartbeat from the presidency.
