Local Motion - June 9-22, 2010


*The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take over the streets of St. Louis June 12. But before the race, Christ Church Cathedral will host Pray for the Cure, an interfaith prayer service for breast cancer survivors and their supporters, at 6:45 a.m. The 20-minute service will take place at Christ Church Cathedral, 1210 Locust St.

*The St. Louis Science Center will soon be out of this world, thanks to a new IMAX movie about the Hubble Space Telescope that opens June 11.

Also dropping in from outer space is Col. Jeffrey N. Williams, an astronaut who has orbited Earth more than 2,800 times, taking photos the whole time. Williams will stop by the Science Center June 10 to discuss why stars twinkle, how rockets fly and life in space with a group of third- and fourth-graders. The astronaut will be in town to promote his new book, The Work of His Hands: A View of God’s Creation from Outer Space, published by the St. Louis-based Concordia Publishing House.

*When Circus Flora opened its 24th season on June 4, it had a couple of local VIPs to help celebrate the occasion. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley stepped into the ring to introduce the show, Ingenioso, before the acrobats, horses and trapeze artists began performing.

*Metro’s Forest Park Shuttle has returned for the summer. Open daily from 9:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., the shuttle bus makes a loop from the Forest Park MetroLink station, stopping at attractions including the Missouri History Museum, Visitors Center, St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis Zoo, Boat House, Muny, Jewel Box, St. Louis Science Center and Steinberg Skating Rink. The shuttle runs through Sept. 6.

*Congratulations to the Loop’s Plowsharing Crafts, which this month celebrates its 25th anniversary of providing fair trade handcrafted products in St. Louis. Over the past 25 years, Plowsharing has worked with more than 150,000 artisans in 40 countries. To celebrate, Plowsharing will present activities, storytelling, music and complimentary fair trade edibles June 17 through 19 in its stores at 6271 Delmar Blvd. and 137 W. Jefferson in Kirkwood.

*The World Cup is upon us again, and the country’s best soccer town is ready to celebrate. To kick off the event, the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis will host a screening of the St. Louis-filmed The Game of Their Lives at 9 p.m. June 11, as well as a screening of the USA vs. England match at noon June 12. Both screenings will take place at the Old Post Office Plaza. The rest of the World Cup matches will be on screens at various watch parties at pubs downtown.
