Wash U.’s cooperation with Clayton is commendable
To the editor:
The interest on the part of Washington University and their neighbors to work together on issues affecting the neighborhood, notably housing on the South 40, is laudable. Recognition that both benefit from the good will and understanding of the other is the maxim.
The neighborhood wants to retain the value of their properties and the tranquil enjoyment thereto. The university needs to replace old and outdated housing. Reduced availability of parking on campus may in fact encourage more students and staff to walk or ride a bike. Improved access, bike and pedestrian facilities, interest in fitness as well as shared bike and vehicle programs have encouraged university populations around the world to abandon the single occupant vehicle.
The neighbors want to see the university, a regional asset, rise in stature nationally and internationally. Washington University wants to strengthen a sense of school spirit by accommodating as many students as possible on campus. Measured development of the campus has made Washington University and the surrounding neighborhood what they are today, a peaceful and prestigious center of learning of incalculable value to the City of Clayton and the entire St. Louis region.
Amicable conversation and mutual accommodation will continue this progress far into the future to the great benefit of all parties concerned. All of us in the region thank you.
