*The Ethical Society of St. Louis is seeking nominations for the 2010 Ethical Humanist of the Year. The annual award recognizes individuals or organizations that exemplify ethical humanism through courage, innovation or dedication to serving humanity. Nominations are due by July 16, and the award will be presented Sept. 26. For information on nominating, visit www.ethicalstl.org.

*Construction has begun in the Galleria on two new dining spots. St. Louis Bread Co., which used to have a presence in the mall, is returning to fill a vacancy near The Cheesecake Factory on the ground floor. Nearby Five Guys Burgers and Fries will also debut this summer in the same part of the mall and will include an outdoor patio area. Galleria officials could not be more specific than saying expect a summer opening.

*From June 4 to 6, Forest Park will be the temporary home of more than 10,000 Boy Scouts and leaders, who will camp in the park over the weekend. In addition to camping in tent cities scattered throughout the park, the scouts will also participate in activities including canoeing, fishing, wall-climbing and riding Segways.

*Monarch Restaurant and Wine Bar will soon be closing its doors for a major renovation. The swanky Maplewood restaurant will close June 1 for a massive overhaul to its bar, bistro and main dining room. When the restaurant reopens later this summer, the menu will reflect the changes, with a new focus on Southern dishes, similar to those offered by Bobby’s, the New Orleans-style restaurant that previously called Monarch’s building home.

*Congratulations to Clayton resident Avani Shandilya, who, at age 7, graduated May 21 from the Central Institute for the Deaf. Shandilya was one of nine deaf or hard-of-hearing children to graduate from the school this May; the graduation ceremony also honored eight master of science in deaf education candidates and 14 doctor of audiology candidates.

*Here’s a tasty way to spend Memorial Day weekend. On May 28 and 29, Schlafly Beer will host the fourth annual Schlafly Brew and Q, which includes the World Pork Steak Championships on Saturday. The winner of the annual competition will take home $500 and bragging rights. The event takes place at Schlafly Bottleworks, 7260 Southwest Ave.

*It seems the ribbon was just broken on the Go! St. Louis Marathon, but Go! St. Louis is already opening registration for its annual Halloween 10K and fun run in downtown St. Louis. Registration is limited to 5,000 for the Oct. 17 event, which includes a post-race costume contest. For more information visit www.gostlouis.org.

*Finally, congratulations to Wydown Middle School student Katherine Yutung Ren and Rosati-Kain High School student Elizabeth Brennan, who took home prizes in the Missouri Botanical Garden’s second annual “Power of Plants” art contest. Ren’s family album for persimmons took home the grand prize — and won her $1,000 — while Brennan’s seek-and-find poster highlighting bamboo products netted her third place in the high school category.
