Local Motion - May 12-25, 2010
*Those nickels and dimes are adding up! In 2008, the Central West End Association started the “Real Change” program, which includes parking-meter-like devices on four CWE corners. Passersby are encouraged to put money in the meters instead of patronizing panhandlers. CWEA President John Berglund reported that the association recently gave $600 checks to both Trinity Episcopal and Second Presbyterian churches for their social service activities, funds derived from the “Real Change” program.
*A new poster featuring the Doors of St. Louis is on its way. Bruce Shoults of The Great Frame Up is coordinating the effort. The rules are this: For a $10 fee people can request that their door be photographed. The doors of single-family homes, condos, businesses and churches in the Central West End are all eligible. During the CWE Art & Taste weekend — that is June 10 and 11 — the photos will be displayed at The Great Frame Up, 22 N. Euclid Ave. During the weekend the 25 images of doors needed for the poster will be selected. Finalists in the contest will receive a matted or framed picture of their door. Winners will receive a framed copy of the poster.
Money raised by the project will be split between three local organizations, CWE Dog Parks, Cathedral Basilica School, and Doorsways Housing Organization. For more info see www.doorsofcwe2010.com.
*A group of activists opposed to the liberal use of wrecking balls in the city is holding a fundraiser at 8 p.m. May 22 at the historic Stahl Stables, 2412 Menard St. in Soulard. The “hootenanny,” to use the organizers’ word, features music from Union Electric, Pretty Little Empire and Leadville, and costs $10. It will raise money for the St. Louis Building Arts Foundation, which collects artifacts that tell the story of St. Louis’ architectural past, and a legal fund for the Friends of the San Luis. That group lost in its bid to save the San Luis, a modernist building (a motel turned apartment complex) on Lindell, which was razed to make way for a parking lot. Though the San Luis has bitten the dust, the group seeks to challenge the court decision that made the demolition possible and to revisit the idea that only those living in historic districts have legal standing in such cases.
*Forest Park Forever is coordinating a series of walking tours in the park most days now through July 31. The hour-long tours begin at the Visitor and Education Center at 5595 Grand Drive, near the History Museum. The walks are at a leisurely pace with brief stops to learn about Forest Park’s history, lore and current events. The tours take place at 1 p.m. on Mondays, and 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The tours are free and reservations are not required. Babies in strollers and leashed pets are welcome. For information call367-7275.
*Downsized! Genre-bending band Ozomatli was supposed to be playing Powell Hall May 14 with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, but the gig has been canceled. The band will still visit St. Louis, with a show May 14 at the much smaller Duck Room at Blueberry Hill. Tickets for one gig cannot be used at the other; ticketholders should call Powell Hall at 534-1700 for a refund.
Ozomatli is also playing a free show at Vintage Vinyl in the Loop at 5:30 p.m. May 14.
