Clayton
School board names new superintendent

On March 8, the School District of Clayton announced that Mary Herrmann was selected to be the next superintendent.

Herrmann, a Wisconsin native, currently serves as superintendent of Winnetka Public Schools 36, a K-8 district of about 2,000 students just north of Chicago. Prior to that, she had served for seven years as superintendent and for two years as associate superintendent in the Barrington Community Unit School District in Barrington, Ill.

“Dr. Herrmann has the educational experience, leadership skills, integrity and vision to lead the School District of Clayton for many years in our pursuit of academic excellence for all students,” said Board of Education President Omri Praiss. “The Board has taken great care to select someone who will be the right fit for our school district and we are extremely excited to appoint Mary as Clayton’s next superintendent.”

The selection was made after an extensive national search by the Board of Education using input from hundreds of parents and community members. Herrmann has accepted a three-year contract that begins on July 1. She will replace Don Senti, who is retiring after leading the district for 15 years.

“Clayton shares similar characteristics with other high-performing school districts where I have had the privilege to work in a leadership role,” says Herrmann. “Education is highly valued and well supported by the community. It is an honor and privilege to be afforded the opportunity to serve the children and families in the Clayton community.”

Long-range transit plan receives final approval

In late February, the Board of the East-West Gateway Council Governments (EWGCG) unanimously approved a long-range plan for the St. Louis region’s transit needs.

The plan, labeled “Moving Transit Forward,” was developed by staff from Metro and EWGCG over the last year and offers the region’s planning agency options for deciding the future of public transit.

“This plan will deliver public transit to people and promote new jobs and regional economic development,” said Robert J. Baer, president and CEO of Metro. “The plan development was driven by thorough research on our region’s transportation needs, local and national transit expertise, and input from the public across the region.”

In the short term, the plan includes restoring services and passenger amenities in addition to adding two Bus Rapid Transit routes; the medium-range plan includes adding more BRT routes and a light-rail expansion route; and the long-term plan is to add additional light-rail expansion routes. All of the possibilities in the plan depend on obtaining a new, long-term source of revenue locally, as well as increases in funding from the state and federal governments.
