*Save the date! The CWE’s Trinity Episcopal Church is hosting the “Rebuild the Wall Against Hunger” Auction Dinner Dance to raise funds to repair its south parish hall from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Mahler Ballroom, 4915 Washington Ave. For information call 361-4655.
*It’s that time of year again. The 7th District Community Partnership will present the fifth annual Officer of the Year Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25 at The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Blvd. The event features St. Louis Blues right winger Cam Janssen and master of ceremonies Ed Goodman of KEZK radio. *Congratulations to St. Louis for being named one of the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” for 2010 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Gateway City was selected for its revitalized downtown area, unique architectural style and diverse and inviting neighborhoods.
*The Legal Services of Eastern Missouri will hold its 20th annual “Justice for All Ball” at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Chase Park Plaza, 212 N. Kingshighway Blvd. The black-tie event features dinner and cocktails, a silent auction and dancing to the sounds of the Soulard Blues Band. For information call 256-8736.
*Will the force be with you? The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department announced plans for a Spring 2010 Citizens Police Academy, a 12-week course designed to give citizens a better understanding of the inner workings of the department. The class runs March 10 through May 26. For information call 444-5638.
*Speaking of the police department, it was recently selected by the United States military to host a group of Iraqi police leaders from the Baghdad Police College. The Feb. 2 visit focused on the fundamentals of police training in the U.S. and assisting the Iraqi police leaders in improving their police training centers, colleges and academies.
*Crossroads College Preparatory School will host its salute to Black History Month at 7 p.m. Feb. 18. The multicultural celebration “Sign of the Time” also features a special tribute performance to the culture of Haiti. For information call 367-8085.
*Cookies for Haiti: a group of CWE kids recently sold cookies their families baked to benefit CRUDEM (Center for the Rural Development of Milot) Foundation, based in St. Louis, which operates Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Milot, 75 miles north of Port-au-Prince.
Among the do-gooding kids were Lily Orchard, Maggie McLaughlin, Sophie Sintin, Ethan Orchard, Brian Epsten and Bernard Lee. Visit http://www.crudem.org for more information about the hospital.
