*Washington University alumnus Robert Behnken will soon have a new way to look at the world: from space. Behnken will be aboard the space shuttle Endeavor when it launches Feb. 7 to deliver the final pieces of the U.S. portion of the International Space Station. Behnken, who received bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and physics from Washington U. in 1992, is expected to return to Earth Feb. 20.
*Maplewood firefighters recently rescued a Brentwood resident from a kitchen fire. Happens every day right? Well, this resident, Moose, was a large dog that was revived thanks to a “dog CPR kit” that had been donated to the fire department by Airedale Antics. Moose is in perfect health today, and according to Maplewood Fire Chief Terry Merrell, the Brentwood fire department has ordered their own pet CPR kits.
*Congratulations to Clayton High School’s new resident smartie, Meredith Redick. Redick recently aced the ACT, scoring a perfect 36. A CHS senior, Redick is also a science whiz, building rockets with the Clayton Rocketry Club when she’s not studying for AP Chemistry and AP Biology.
*The city of St. Louis is currently conducting a state law-mandated voter canvass, making sure all voter registrations are on the up-and-up. A postcard with a permanent voter identification card, info about the voter’s registration and a schedule of upcoming elections should have arrived at each residence in late January; if you haven’t received it, call the city Board of Elections at 622-4336.
*The Feb. 2 Cathedral Concerts show by the Canadian Brass was dedicated to the memory of Joyce Littlefield, the CWE activist who died last year. Littlefield, who worked for former Mayor A.J. Cervantes and was a driving force behind the development of Maryland Plaza, was also a volunteer and parishioner at the Cathedral Basilica (“new” Cathedral) on Lindell Boulevard. Among her volunteer activities? Taking tickets at the Cathedral Concerts.
*Longtime central corridor realtor Marcia Harris has a new work home: she was recently named a sales agent at Dielmann Sotheby’s International Real Estate in Clayton. Harris previously worked for Prudential Select Properties. Harris, a University City resident, has been a realtor for more than 30 years and serves on the board of Cinema St. Louis.
*In other real estate news, J. Warner of Laura McCarthy Realtors in Clayton has been named the company’s top sales agent for 2009.
*The St. Louis Walk of Fame will soon have a new star. It was recently announced that legendary soul band The 5th Dimension is scheduled to appear at a March 18 induction ceremony. Three members of the five-person group — Billy Davis Jr., Lamonte McLemore and Ron Townson — are St. Louis natives. The 5th Dimension’s star will be placed at 6164 Delmar Blvd., making it the fourth star in the St. Louis city portion of the Loop.
*The Clayton Chamber of Commerce is ready to celebrate! The chamber will host its annual awards dinner Feb. 4 at the Ritz-Carlton. Among those receiving laurels are Scott Zajac of Advantage Capital Partners, who has been named 2009 Clayton Business Person of the Year. Zajac is senior managing director at Advantage and also serves on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri and Missouri Families for Effective Autism Treatment.
Additionally, Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers will be honored for excellence in retail and Go! St. Louis will be given the 2009 Cornerstone Award.
*More than 60 Rosati-Kain students recently made the trek to Washington, D.C., to join the annual March for Life and hold a pro-life prayer service. Campus minister Karen Weber traveled with the girls, who also performed a “living rosary” during the event.
*With spring just around the corner, the University of Missouri Extension is offering an eight-week course in St. Louis-area farming beginning Feb. 16. In addition to learning about growing your own veggies and raising your own poultry, the classes offer the extra enticement of being held at Schlafly Bottleworks, 7260 Southwest Blvd. To register for the class, call 615-2911. The registration deadline is Feb. 12.
