Wagner’s audit comments are misleading

To the editor:

Those of us that worked to collect the signatures necessary to activate a state audit of University City government were more than a little surprised by the postcards sent out recently by University City Councilman Bob Wagner, a candidate for mayor in the April 6 election.

Wagner used the postcards to thank everyone who signed the petition for a state audit and added, “I intend to meet and work with the auditors during this process, to assure concerns raised by you who signed the petitions are examined thoroughly.”

Though he makes it sound almost as if he directed the petition drive for the state audit, Wagner had previously told people he did not support the audit. He did not even sign the petition. Five days after the 3,200 signatures were handed in to the state auditor, Wagner announced at a city council meeting that he supports the audit.

Of the three candidates for mayor — Terry Crow, Bob Wagner and Shelley Welsch — only Welsch supported the petition for a state audit and also signed it. Wagner now says he supports the audit and Crow has never supported it.
