Washington U. should help U. City fight gangs
To the editor:
I’m always glad to see news about University City in the West End Word, and on the front page. However, in this case [“U. City schools, city council team up for gang prevention,” Nov. 25], I am glad it was below the fold, considering the subject. What a shame.
The last two paragraphs really surprised me. No longer having any family or friends who have children in school, I did not realize they did not have after-school programs to engage the students. Unfortunately, asking $100,000 from the city at this point is probably beyond a long shot.
However, we have a very viable presence in our community that could partner with the city and school district. What better source for the guidance and funding needed than Washington University, since WU owns many properties in all areas of University City, including units with Washington University students living in them?
What great role models and sources for mentoring these WU students would be, helping guide University City High School students in positive activities.
Perhaps with help from Washington University, with their skills, prestige and resources this could be turned into a “full front page success story.”
